During the Digital Summit 2023, Tobias Heuser, Director of Applied AI & Innovation at [ui!], unveiled a groundbreaking project called "KIWA" (AI-based Forest Monitoring). 🛩 The Civic Coding initiative facilitated the presentation of this innovative undertaking at the #DigitalSummit2023, bringing together Artificial Intelligence, drones, and decision support systems to create data-driven transparency in forest fire monitoring.

🛠 KIWA is built upon the Open Urban Data Platform [ui!] UrbanPulse, enabling users to centrally collect, analyze, and use AI to detect forest fires early and coordinate local response teams based on real-time data. This approach not only promises improved prevention but also a more efficient response to potential forest fires.

The participants in the 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 panel at the beginning of the event, Lilian Tschan, Secretary of State in the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (BMAS), and Dr. Christiane Rohleder, Secretary of State in the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection (BMUV), were equally convinced of the challenges and potential benefits of the project.

Moderator Cherno Jobatey emphasized the importance of making natural disasters such as forest fires more manageable, highlighting the role of KIWA as a valuable contribution. The project aligns with the goal of protecting and understanding our environment through innovative technologies and data-based solutions.

KIWA's holistic approach demonstrates how technology from the heart of society can bring about positive changes. ⚙ It is encouraging to see Artificial Intelligence being used not only as technological progress but also as a tool to solve real-world problems.
